Poker Glossary
A
Ace High - Any hand in which the top card is an ace
All in - when a player puts the last on his chips into a pot he is said
to be all in, a player all in cannot win any money bet after their final
bet
Ante - Money contributed to the pot before the hand is dealt
Auto Blind - online poker term, usually a button that be be turned
on and left on that will automatically post the small or big blind
Auto Muck - online poker term, usually a button that can be turned on or
off
that will automatically
muck your cards without showing them
B
Babies - small cards
usually those with values less than 6
Bad Beat - when
a hand is lost with a hand that usually would win the pot,,( many online mulitplayer poker sites have bad beat bonuses,
the bonus is often more than what the player would have won with the hand)
Backdoor making a hand you weren't playing for, eg. You play
for a full house but make a flush
Bankroll - the amount of money a player is willing to put at risk in a
game
Bet - money put into the pot as
Bicycle- an A-2-3-4-5 holding in a lowball game also know as Wheel
Big Blind - the larger of the blind bets contributed to the pot, before
any cards are dealt
Blank - a useless card to a hand
Blind - a player who must make an opening bet before any cards
are dealt
Bluff - a bet with a weak hand, usually trying to get the others
players to fold without playing to a showdown where it is likely the hand
would lose.
Board - the cards seen by all the players, the community cards in the
center of the table or in a players hand in a game like stud poker
Bring it in - the card that must force the action on the first round
of betting
Bullets - a pair of aces in the hole
Burn a Card - removal to the top card of a deck by the dealer the card
is removed and kept out of play
Button - a disk that is used to show who is the theoretical dealer,
in online poker it looks like a little button and usually has a small
D on it
Buy - the receiving of a card from the dealer
Buy in - the amount of money it requires to get into a game, it is the
money available to bet in the game
C
Call - making a bet equal to the previous bet
Calling Station - a player who always seems to call but never raises
a bet
Cap - the number of times a raise can be reraiseed, online games bets
usually can be raised 3 times
Capping a Raise- the final raise in most games, the third raise in most
games
Card room - the actual room where the game is played in a poker club
Catch - when a draw makes a hand , players may comment "Nice Catch"
Chat - a feature of most online poker games where players can communicate
to each other by typing messages
Check - pass, do not bet on one's turn to bet
Check/Fold Button - online poker sites allow you to select your action before
your turn a Check/Fold button when checked will Fold your
hand if any bets are made and check
your hand if no bets are made
Check and Raise - a player checks on the first opportunity to bet then
raises on his next opportunity
Citadel - online banking method used by multiplayer poker sites to fund
poker accounts and distribute cash to players
Cold Call - calling a bet and raise at the same time after first checking,
or betting for the first time
Community Cards - games shared by all players to make a hand, the cards
in the center to the table to be used by all players
Comp Program - or comps, most sites online offer players cash incentives
to signup and points or other benefits for loyalty
Crying Call - a call made on a weak hand usually made with reluctance

Declare - a player announcing by use of chips whether he is going high,
low or high low in a hi-lo game
Dead Money - the money left in the pot when a player folds his hand
Deal - distribute the cards to the players
Door Card - the first card dealt face up in a 7 Card Stud Game is the
Door Card
Draw - receiving more cards in a game
Draw Dead - when even if you draw the card you need you will lose the
hand
Drop - (to Fold) to give up your cards and remove yourself from the play
of the hand

Early Position - in an early betting position
for a hand weakest position

Family Pot - where everyone at the table is
still involved in the pot
Fast Play- betting and raising aggressively
Firepay - an internet banking method used to fund accounts and withdraw
money
Flop - the first community cards dealt at once in a game like hold'em
or omaha (the first 3 cards dealt to the table in hold'em is the flop)
Fold - to give up your cards and remove yourself from play of the hand
Flush - a hand where all five cards share the same suit, the best flush
hand is the one with the highest ranking noncommon card
Forced Bet - a bet that a player has no choice but to make, a blind bet
Free Card - you get to see an additional card without having to call or
bet
Freezeout - a tournament format whereby you cannot rebuy, your buyin is
the limit of your play

Garbage Hand - a hand that is not worth playing as it contains worthless
cards
H
Hand - the cards you hold, the best 5 cards
in games where more than 5 cards are available for one to play
High Hand - the
best hand in any round of poker
Heads Up - one on one
play, only two players are involved in the game
High-Low Split - games
where half the pot goes to the highest ranking poker hand and half goes to
the lowest ranking poker hand
Hold'em - poker game
where each player receives 2 pocket cards and tries to make the best hand
using these 2 cards and 5 community cards dealt to the table, bets can be made after the
2 pocket cards are dealt, after the first 3 community cards are dealt and
after the 4th
and 5th community cards are dealt, most popular game played online
Hole Cards - the card
or cards in stud poker unseen by the other players
House - The House,
the owners management of the game who take the rake and manage the games

Ignorant End of a Straight
- the lower end of the straight, when drawing to an outside straight you
draw the lower end eg. on a 3456 you draw
a 2 instead of a 7 , ignorant
when you lose to a player holding the 7 in a similar straight
Inside Straight - drawing
to an inside straight is drawing to a straight that is missing a card in
the middle eg. drawing a card on a 2356 looking
for
a 4. An outside straight would inlcude 4 consecuvite cards 3456 to improve
your hand you would have to draw a 2 or 7
J
Joker -- a wild card that can be used as any card the player wishes,
(generally not used in mulitplayer games online)
K
Kicker -
an odd card in a draw hand, usually
a high card retained for the draw
L
Late Position - advantageous betting
position whereby all or most of the players have made bets before late players
chance to bet
Loball - a variation of poker where the lowest ranking poker hand wins
Loose Player - a player who gets involved in most pots whether or not he
holds a good hand
Low Poker - games where players aim to have the lowest ranked poker hand
Loyalty Plan - an incentive given to players to continue to play at an
online poker site
M
Middle Position - middle betting position
in a hand of poker usually have a few players who bet ahead of you and a
few who bet behind
Monster - a very powerful
hand
Muck - disregarded cards, when players muck there cards they are returned
to the dealer
N
Neteller - an online banking mechanism
used to fund accounts and make withdraws
No Limit - any game where they
is no limit on the bets and raises
Nuts - the absolute best possible hand,
a hand that cannot lose
O
Omaha - type of poker game involving
both pocket cards and flop cards, very common online game
Open - to open the betting , making the first bet in the first round
Overcard - a card on the board higher than your pair
P
Paint - a face card
Pair - two cards of the same rank
Pocket Cards - the cards dealt face down to each player in Hold'em or Omaha
Position - the place of a player at the table in relation to the opener
, early middle or late
Pot - the total money or chips on the
table after all the betting is complete
Pot -Limit - a game where a player's maximum bet is the size of
the pot
Pot Odds - the calculated odds the money in the pot represents in
relation to how much it will cost to play and hand
and the players chances of winning

Prop Player or Prop - a player that is paid to play, play with their own
money but generally paid hourly to play

Rag
- useless card
Rake - the houses take on each hand, usually a percentage of the pot
Raise - after betting has opened, increasing the amount of the bet is a
raise
Razz - seven card stud played for low
River - the last community card dealt to players in games like Hold'em
and Stud Poker
Rock - a player who is extremely tight, will only stay in with the absolute
best hands
S
Scare Cards - Board Cards that look to be the best hand
Seven Card Stud - a form of poker common in online poker rooms and everywhere else
2 cards down, 4 face up
and
1 last card down, round of betting after first up card and every subsequent card
Showdown - the showing of cards after the last bets have been made
Slow Play - not raising but merely calling or checking, may be used strategically
when a strong hand is held
Small Blind - the early blind bet made before any cards are dealt
Smooth - the best possible low hand with a certain card, eg a smooth 7

Spit Pot - hands in which the pot is split between more than one player,
happens very frequently in high-low games
but ties may occur in games in which players makeup hands with community cards
Steal - to steal the pot is raising in expectation that all other players
will fold, if they fold the player has stolen the pot
Street - a term to designate the rounds of betting according to how many
cards have been dealt out
Stud - games in which there are no community cards, the player plays only
the cards in his/her hand
T
Table Stakes- the player is limited to
betting only the money or chips he or she has at the table
Tells - gestures or words by a player that give away the value of his/her
hand
Texas Hold'em - see Hold'em (same game)
Tight - a tight player is a player who never bets unless they hold a good hands
Tournament Poker - generally all players start with the same number of
chips or dollars and play until one player has all the chips or cash, to speed things up usually antes and blinds
increase according to a predetermined schedule
Turn , The Turn - Fourth Street in a 7 Card Stud Poker game

Under the Gun - the player who
must act first in any round of poker
